I have a persistent slice when hitting the golf ball. It makes the game hard and frustrating. To improve and get more out of my rounds I need to change something. The trouble is…it is really hard to change.
Positive change will require learning how to improve my swing, then putting it into practice with consistent and constant effort, until such time that the new swing becomes second nature. Working the process may take a long time, will be full of failures, and I am sure I will want to give up. The reward will be reaching goals and achieving a more enjoyable round of golf.
So, where else do you and I need to change? Do we need to change the way we react to a person or situation? Do we need to change our habits to be more healthy? Do we need to change our work habits to become more productive?
Analyzing our lives and changing things will result in the achievement of goals that will allow us to live with purpose and fulfillment. The greatest coaches show us what needs to change in our play and provide us motivation to apply the consistent and constant effort required to effectuate the change.
Romans 12:2 says…”Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (NLT). God desires to change you completely. He desires to change the way you think and therefore live. That process, like the process for any change, starts with a decision.
First, decide that you are ready for a change in your life, be it spiritual, at work, at home, or in athletics. Second, surrender your current habits and way of thinking. Third, find instruction that teaches you the new ways you wish to embrace. Finally, practice consistently, constantly, and with great effort. You will be transformed.
